3 Foodies & a Food Hall
The Street, a new social eating hall curated by Michael Mina, takes diners on a culinary journey with chefs from around the nation. In one bustling spot, patrons can sample ramen from Sonoma County’s Ken Tominaga, burgers from Washington D.C.’s David Varley, comfort food from the Bay Area’s Ayesha Curry, and shave ice from Honolulu’s Michelle Karr-Ueoka—the options are as varied as they are delicious. We rounded up three individuals—all with diverse backgrounds and a deep affinity for cuisine—and asked them how they would spend $35 at The Street. Here’s a recap of their food-fueled day.

Tropical Shave Ice
From Aloha Ice, $5.99
Michelle Karr-Ueoka’s creations are a must—the hard part is deciding which flavor. It usually comes down to Tropical Shave Ice with shaved pineapple and haupia sorbet, or Strawberry-Hibiscus Shave Ice with li hing strawberries and mocha ice cream. Best to go with a friend and share both.

Roar Smoothie
From Indie Girl Wellness Bar, $10.99
They make some of the best smoothies on the island. My go-to order is “Roar”, with a base of matcha, bananas, and house-made macadamia nut milk.

Everything Hawaiian Rolls and Coconut-Curry Cornbread
From International Smoke, $0.99 each
My favorite items are the “hidden gems.” Ribs and brisket are popular here, but don’t overlook the sides. The rolls are plush and sweet, sprinkled with an everything bagel topping, and the cornbread is served warm from the oven, brushed with melted butter. I always take a few of these back home for breakfast the next day.

The Avocado
From Little Lafa, $6.99
When I need a savory afternoon snack, I go to this concept created by Michael Mina himself and inspired by his childhood. This dish is made of ripe avocado halves marinated in jalapenos, zhug, garlic, and cilantro, then sliced, spooned into a bowl and topped with radishes and corn. A dream!

Pistachio Cannoli
From Nana Lu, $2.99
It’s not easy finding cannolis in Hawai‘i, much less a great one. These are filled with whipped ricotta cream and dotted with crushed pistachios. Never a soggy shell.

Caesar Nicoise Salad
From Mindful Greens, $9.99
I like that this salad is both rich and light at once. It has bright and creamy flavors, but isn’t too heavy. The romaine is crisp and refreshing while the roasted red pepper, parmesan, and hard-boiled egg bring some satisfying depth.

Fried Pickles with Rooster Dipping Sauce
From Maui Onion Burger, $4.99
I lived in New Orleans for 8 years and still hold a special place in my heart for deep fried pickles. This is a rare find in Hawai‘i, and the pickles on offer at Maui Onion Burger make a great snack to go with your cocktail from The Myna Bird or whatever is on draft at the beer bar.

Side of Hummus and Pita Bread
from Little Lafa, $6.99 and $0.99
I love hummus, and I’m always drawn to it. This, with the fresh, light pita bread is a great appetizer.
